Bad Mesh

We all love mesh, but having alot of bad mesh on your regions will cause serious issues, such as extreme lag, failed teleports and region crashes. Most of the bad mesh tend to be buildings plants and statues but can also be anything from a small table to a simple picture frame.

How can you tell if mesh is bad?

Mesh items tend to be made in programs such as Blender, when the item is made they are made out of triangles, so if you have a 1 prim mesh statue with 9,000 triangles in it, your region and viewer has to then load those 9,000 tiny triangles every time. The best way to describe this is whilst the item may show as only 1 prim on your land the actual impact of having 9,000 triangles is as though you have 9.000 + 1 prims for your land and viewer to load.

Once you have rezzed the mesh item onto the ground right click and go into edit mode, go to the object tab and the mesh item should show how many triangles the item has, the more triangles in the item the worse the item is.

1 – 1,000 TrianglesExtremely good mesh

1,000 – 2,000 Triangles – Very good mesh

2,000 – 3,000 Triangles – Good mesh

3,000 – 6,000 Triangles – Ok mesh

6,000 – 10,000 Triangles – Bad mesh

10,000 – 20,000 Triangles – Very bad mesh

20,000 – 90,000+ Triangles Extremely bad mesh

If the mesh item is made out of more then 1 prim always check each prim, to do this go into edit mode and then select the edit linked option, click different parts of the mesh item to see what each triangle count is. some mesh items can be deceiving, for example, you might right click then edit a mesh item such as a sofa and it may say 108 triangles, then once you click on the frame of the sofa it could show as being 30,000 triangles.

Try to avoid mesh when possible

Try to avoid mesh buildings and use sculpted plants, trees and rocks for decor around your regions and if you are building custom buildings try to avoid mesh where possible. This will keep your regions running healthy and fast. Try to keep mesh on your regions to furniture but always make sure that you check that it is not bad mesh.
